North Minneapolis property acquisition, a new website, and board spotlights.

PIPCLT closes on first property!

Dear Community of Supporters,

Here we are, in the final month of the year. Before we close the books on 2021 and welcome in the new year, we wanted to share a few exciting updates with you.

Organizational Updates:

Property Updates:

  • Our first acquisition! We officially closed on 1819 Lowry Ave N. in the Jordan Neighborhood on December 10, 2021. A business owner for this space is currently being vetted. More information to come.

  • Our second acquisition! On December 28, PIPCLT will purchase the first two properties in a four property bundle at 35th and Penn Ave N in the Cleveland Neighborhood. These properties will be owned by Northside Investment Cooperative Enterprise (NICE) MN who plan on retaining existing commercial and residential tenants. A special thank you to Land Bank Twin Cities for stepping in to secure the properties in an interim capacity and to Metropolitan Consortium of Community Developers (MCCD) for extending an acquisition loan! We appreciate your partnership.

  • If you’re a business owner and have an eye on a commercial property you wish you could own, contact us to see if we can help make your wish a reality! Email communication@pipclt.org

Board Member Spotlight:

Today, learn more about Davis Senseman.

What do you do?
I'm a small business and non-profit attorney working with businesses and organizations that are in or serve underestimated and under resourced communities. Basically I help small business owners and non-profit boards and staff navigate legal and business issues.

What neighborhood do you live in? I live in Northeast Minneapolis.

Why did you join PIPCLT board? I've worked with small business owners for my entire career, and I've seen how the most difficult and common issue for most of them is the uncertainty of finding a location and then being able to stay there. This is especially true for business owners who want to serve their community - they often run into the issue that extractive speculators have bought up all of the possible commercial space. I know small businesses are the keys to keeping our communities safe and thriving, and I was thrilled when I learned about PIPCLT, because it directly addresses so many things - economic revitalization, community resource control and ownership, and investments in the small businesses that serve our communities.

  • Fun Fact: In college I was a trainer for the softball, volleyball and football teams. It's come in handy because my oldest son is a very active basketball player (and football this year) so I'm often treating, stretching or taping ankles, knees, etc at home.

Business Spotlight:

Zahnia Harut, RN BSN PHN---Director of nursing, public health nurse, owner of Affinity Residential Care Llc, is a serial entrepreneur born and raised in the twin cities. Zahnia is bilingual in English and Spanish and offers several years of experience as a medical, surgical, and trauma nurse. Although nursing was her first passion, she has special interests in real estate, community wealth building, financial literacy, supportive housing, and homelessness prevention initiatives.

  • What does your business do? Affinity Care MN (Affinity Residential Care) is a housing and community-based services provider in the metro area of Minnesota. We provide housing support, assisted living services , and integrated community support services for individuals with severe and persistent mental disabilities.

  • Where are you headquartered? Bloomington, Minnesota. We have sites in Minneapolis, Bloomington, Richfield, and St.Paul.

  • Why did you want to partner with PIPCLT? I wanted to partner with PIPCLT because I am strongly aligned with the vision, mission, and values of PIPCLT. I also was excited to be a part of what I believe is a significant stride forward in reducing the wealth gap in BIPOC communities by providing education, a network and opportunities for ownership.

That’s a wrap for 2021. We look forward to sharing more news and updates with you in 2022.

In partnership,

Domonique Jones, Executive Director and PIPCLT Board Members: Danielle Mkali, Aarica Coleman, DeVon Nolen, Jimmy Loyd, Taylor Smrikárova (née Cooper), Cameran Bailey, Barbara Hall, Andrew McLean, Kowsar Mohamed, Zahnia Harut and Qannani Omar, Davis Senseman, Mark Fick and E. Coco.
